CIHSR is the culmination of a possible solution for the great need of health in the region. It is a tripartite partnership of Christian Medical College Vellore, Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA) and the State of Nagaland. The Chief Secretary of the state is the chairperson of the CIHSR society and the Executive Director of EHA is the Chairman of the Board of Directors. Each of these three organizations comprise the Governing body which facilitates the establishment and growth of the institution that aims at creating a holistic health destination that in turn will take responsibility for reaching out to the furthest most parts of the region and impact health in Northeast India. CMC Vellore contributes significantly by way of training opportunities, regular visits by consultants, information transfer and advice. EHA provides the sponsorship avenue for CIHSR staff and students to study at CMC Vellore and Ludhiana. Through its wide network of hospitals and friends, it plays a vital role in guiding and facilitating the institution’s growth. The 130 acres land on which the institution stands is on a 30 years lease from the Government of Nagaland. It is situated about 6 kms on the outskirts of Dimapur in Nagaland. In its 10 years of existence, we have established a high level secondary health center with a college of nursing, several paramedical courses, postgraduate DNB courses in Family Medicine, surgery and Medicine. We also run health-training courses for lay leaders, Health sector skill development and are a center for conducting distance education course for the M Med postgraduate course from the MGR Medical University. We run a programme for helping Children with special needs with a developmental pediatrics unit and the precious gems school for special children. We are in the process of developing a radiotherapy and Cancer care center facilitated by the Tata Trust. We have signed an MOU with the DONER ministry to develop a regional institution for Allied health sciences and are in the process of setting up the infrastructure. We continue to develop partnerships and network with likeminded organizations who are interested in the health of the region. Eventually, we aspire to start a Medical college that will train and develop a large number of individuals who will take responsibility for the health of the region.

Zion Hospital and Research Centre is a joint venture between a group of well qualified doctors, representing the Bethel Medical Research Society, and a well known businessman and philanthropist, Mr.Yashitsungba Ao and his family. The hospital is the culmination of a long struggle by this set of dedicated people to bring in quality health care to our state. Having realized the necessity of medical professionals to work jointly in this era of specialization and super specialization, it was decided to launch a centre through which these individuals could collectively be of service to the people. The first step towards achieving this goal was the formation of the above mentioned society in the year 1998 and its registration as an NGO. Since then, the journey hasn’t been an easy one. The foundation stone to mark the commencement of construction works for the hospital building itself was laid in March, 2004. During the construction and commissioning of the project, many hurdles had to be overcome. In spite of all this, we have come a long way and the OPD has been operational since the 5th of December, 2005 and finally the centre was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Nagaland, Shri Neiphiu Rio on the 11th of February 2006. The primary aim of ZHRC is to make available state-of-the-art medical equipments through which qualified professionals can deliver their competent services to the public at affordable charges. With a view to ease the financial constrains and inconveniences faced by people seeking treatment outside the state, standard health care facilities are being offered at the doorstep of the people.

Nagaland University, the 13th Central University and the only Central University in Nagaland was established based on the Act of Parliament of India and received the assent of the President of India on 20th October 1989 as THE NAGALAND UNIVERSITY ACT 1989 (No. 35 of 1989) and came into force as notified in THE GAZETTE OF INDIA EXTRAORDINARY PART-II SECTION-1 in October 1989 published by the Ministry of Law and Justice (Legislative Department), New Delhi. ..........The University came into being on September 6, 1994 having jurisdiction over the entire state of Nagaland. Prior to this, Nagaland had been in the catchment area of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), with Kohima designated as one of the campuses of NEHU along with SASRD-Medziphema. With the establishment of Nagaland University, the two erstwhile campuses inherited from NEHU as well as the colleges affiliated to it fell within the jurisdiction of Nagaland University. The nascent University had to go through many teething problems initially. The Headquarters of the University, i.e. Lumami, as per the Act could not immediately accommodate the needful so as to start functioning as Headquarters. Hence, for nearly a decade and half Nagaland University had been functioning from Kohima as the interim Headquarters of the University. Meanwhile, the establishment of the academic departments was sanctioned by the Government in the year 1997. All the new departments had to be located at Lumami and started functioning with Kohima still as the interim Headquarters. Constructional activities started earnestly making it fit for academic pursuits at the Headquarters in the best possible way. Upon the completion of new constructions to a reasonable stage, the shifting of interim arrangement at Kohima to Lumami took place in the mid year of 2010. ..........At present the University has four campuses, viz. (i) Headquarters at Lumami in Zunheboto district (ii) Kohima Campus at Meriema in Kohima district (iii) Medziphema Campus (School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development) at Medziphema in Dimapur district and (iv) a temporary campus at Dimapur with two Schools (School of Engineering & Technology and School of Management Studies). There are 37 departments offering Undergraduate and Postgraduate and Ph.D. programmes in different disciplines of Arts, Commerce, Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Engineering & Technology and Management streams. There are 65 colleges from all over the state of Nagaland currently affiliated to Nagaland University.

John Bosco was born of a poor family on 16th August, 1815 at Becchi, a hamlet belonging to the municipality of Castelnuovo d’Asti (today Castelnuovo Don Bosco) in Italy. He lost his father, Francesco, at the age of two and his mother Margaret (Margherita) had to look after him and his two brothers Antonio and Guiseppe. It was under Mama Margaret that John Bosco learnt farming and praying. She was his inspiration in his growing years. It was Mama Margaret who taught him to see God in the beauty of creation, harvest, rain and above all in the face of the poor who came to their house for food and shelter. John Bosco had his first dream at the age of nine which changed his entire life. He saw a multitude of very poor boys, playing and blaspheming. He, then, saw a Man who told him that he will conquer these friends with meekness and charity. Man in the vision showed him a majestic Lady who would be his teacher and guide. The Lady told him that he must make himself humble, strong and robust and that at the right time he will understand everything. The Man in the vision was none other than Jesus and the Lady was Mother Mary. It took him many years to understand the full impact and meaning of this dream. John Bosco learnt juggler’s tricks and acrobat’s secrets and performed for kids of the neighbourhood. He also narrated the morning Mass sermons to these kids and transformed them. He wanted to study and become a priest to do good to many of these poor boys. He left home in February1827 at the age of twelve to work as a farm-worker. He worked in Moglia farm near Moncucco for three years. He herded cattle to pasture, milked cows and ploughed the fields and studied in the night. John Bosco, then, returned home and resumed his studies in Castelnuovo and later at Chieri. He also learn to different trades like, shoe making, black smithy, carpentry, tailoring and the like. He gave coaching to students to support himself. He founded the “Happy Club” to organize the students. John Bosco becomes Don Bosco At the age of twenty, John Bosco joined the Seminary at Chieri. He underwent intense study for six years and was ordained a priest on 5th June, 1841 by the Archbishop of Turin and became Don Bosco (in Italy the family name of a priest is preceded by Don which means Father). It was the fulfillment of his dream. He went round the streets of Turin and gathered the poor street boys peddlers, cobblers, stable-boys, vendor-boys of all types, stone-cutters, masons and the like. He started the Oratorio (oratory) for these youth at Valdocco. It was not a charitable institution but a shelter home from where these youth could go for work and study. These were the years of great financial difficulties for Don Bosco. Don Bosco’s first benefactor in these trying times was his mother, Mama Margaret. She left her home at Becchi to become the mother of these poor boys. She sold her wedding ring, her ear rings and her necklace to support Don Bosco. Don Bosco started the tailoring and shoe-making shops in the oratory at Valdocco. He also built other workshops for training the orphans, and the abandoned boys in book-binding, carpentry, printing and mechanics. Some of the boys sheltered by Don Bosco decided to follow his footsteps and spend the rest of their lives with him. True to his pass word “at once” he started the Society of St. Francis de Sales in 1859, commonly known as the Salesian Congregation composed of fathers and brothers (lay religious) for the continuance of the work started by him. The great pioneers of the Salesian Congregation were Michael Rua, John Cagliero (who later became a cardinal) and John Baptist Francesia. Don Bosco’s zeal did not end there. He founded the Society of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (salesian sisters) and the salesian co-operators (people living in their own families). He also founded 59 salesian houses in six nations. He started the salesian mission in Latin America by sending salesian priests, brothers and sisters. He introduced a system of education founded on three values: reason, religion and loving-kindness. Don Bosco passed away on 31st January, 1888 at the age of 73. He said in a whisper the following last words to the Salesians who were keeping vigil around his bed, “Love each other as brothers. Do good to all and evil to none. Tell my boys that I wait for them all in Paradise.” Don Bosco was declared “Blessed” in 1929 and canonized by Pope Pius XI on Easter Sunday, 1934. Pope John Paul II gave the title of “Father and Teacher of Youth” to Don Bosco. Today there are more than 15,300 salesians working in more than 2500 Don Bosco institutions spread across 132 countries.
